Introduction
As of yet, no one has discovered the ideal recipe for the weather app. Basic forecast apps with cartoonish icons are pre-installed on phones, but modern mobile devices are capable of much more. Recently, an ambitious project named Dark Sky was released on the App Store. To test it out, I partnered with former RWW webmaster and weather expert Jared Smith.
Dark Sky is an iPhone and iPad software that was funded entirely through Kickstarter that focuses on the typical use case for a weather app on a mobile device. By default, it utilizes your current location, but you can watch the weather anywhere (currently limited to the United States). Dark Sky concentrates on answering the question you ask your phone as you leave the house: Is it raining right now, and will it rain soon? It does away with the intricate modeling (and guessing) involved in weather forecasting.
Its UI is completely original. A timeline featuring a graph of the precipitation over the following hour is displayed on the phone. What is happening right now and what will happen in an hour is listed below in large text. You can scroll back and forth in time to see the short-term predictions of the cool, animated radar view at the top that provides an overall impression of the precipitation. For a brief tiny phone app, the UI is really powerful. The radar is viewable from the iPad’s home screen.
One of Dark Sky’s creators, Jay LaPorte, states, “For our initial release, we’re just focusing on precipitation and getting that right.”
“The majority of meteorologists rely on intricate mathematical models to predict the weather, which are useful for medium-term forecasting but not very accurate for short-term conditions.” Dark Sky lets the nerds handle the long-range predictions. We use a statistical method that may horrify them (a few have even emailed us to express their shock), but it works incredibly well for brief periods of time: we only attempt to predict the amount of precipitation, if any, for the following hour.
The software offers a little entertainment value when the skies are clear because its main focus is precipitation. It reads, “CLEAR SKIES ARE BORING,” in bright yellow letters. “Press this to see a storm in Smicksburg, Pennsylvania,” or to see the activity elsewhere.
With regard to the fundamental query of whether or not to pack an umbrella, Dark Sky’s interface is flawless. The radar view is beautiful, and all the information is displayed in the appropriate areas. So what is Dark Sky’s performance in the field?
Is It Accurate?
For a few days, Jared and I both evaluated the app in our respective settings. While the short-term predicting was inconsistent, the “NOW” part was rather accurate. The trend lines can even be seen to change while the program does calculations.
We contrasted the radar pictures with Jared’s reliable weather radar app, RadarScope. The images were similar for basic, slow-moving weather systems. But as Jared noted, the radar hues of Dark Sky are distinct. He remarks, “I can tell this wasn’t created by meteorologists.”
The standard color scale of blue to violet, which complements the app’s color schemes but seems to understate severe weather, takes the place of the customary green, yellow, and red scale, softening it. As the weather gets worse, the radar’s forecast model also becomes notably less accurate.
Actually, the weather that worried us the most was the extreme kind. The night we tested, there were strong storms in Minnesota, complete with tornadoes on the ground, yet Dark Sky’s readout stated, “NOW: Rain.” It’s one thing to incorporate the bizarre physics of erratic, fast-moving storms into the program, but that’s currently beyond of Dark Sky’s purview. However, why not just include “Tornado”? Iconizing a warning might be a good idea.
According to LaPorte, “Dark Sky doesn’t make any effort to identify and compensate for chaotic storm behavior.” The squad does not include any meteorologists. All they are are enthusiastic programmers pursuing a common use case.
“But we’re definitely keeping an eye out for extreme weather warnings, and they align nicely with one of the features we’re working on for our 2.0 release: push notifications.”
Dark Sky has an excellent interface as of right now, and its short-term precipitation tracking is worthwhile. Even though it doesn’t simulate the prediction of strong storms, we do hope that it will include severe weather alerts. While Dark Sky focuses on answering the correct question—”Is it going to rain?”—people will also be depending on weather applications to keep them safe.
