New interface for GoodNotes App
The app has a whole new interface that I believe functions much better.
First, instead of having tabs at the bottom, all of your notebooks are now organized on the left side: Documents, Favorites, Search, Shared, and Marketplace. Part of the adjustment was to make room for the remaining two categories, but this is the same layout as many other professional iPad apps, and I prefer it.
Second, there is a new coat of paint, so to speak. When you are viewing your notebook-containing folders, you may now attach colors and icons to them. This makes it much easier to find and choose the folder you want.
When you open a specific notebook and start taking notes, the interface refreshes and makes greater use of the top of the screen, even if you have numerous tabs open.
Faster selection of items in GoodNotes App
There are several new gestures in Goodnotes but my favorite is the new choosing gesture. I frequently type some notes, then remember that I want to go back and put something above, so I have to shift what I just wrote down the page. In the past, I would choose the lasso tool, create a circle around the text (or graphics, photos, or anything), and then use a finger to move the contents of the lasso to a different spot.
In Goodnotes App, there is no need to transition from the pen to the lasso tool. Simply draw a circle around whatever you wish to pick, then hold down one finger on the circle’s outline for roughly a second. The circle will become a dotted line (as if you had selected it with the lasso tool), and you will be able to move to a new position. You save a few steps, allowing you to resume taking notes more quickly.
This is an excellent new feature that never occurred to me as something that may be more efficient. Congratulations to the designers for creating and implementing this one.
Scribble to erase
This feature is a fantastic idea in principle, however I’m having difficulties implementing it in practice. The concept is that when you want to erase, instead of moving to the eraser tool or double-tapping the side of your Apple Pencil, you simply scratch out the word, or even part of a word, and everything you scratched out disappears. This reminds me of a motion used on Apple Newtons in the 1990s.
I appreciate the idea of erasing without the need to switch tools. However, this feature has only worked about 20% of the time for me; the remainder of the time, Goodnotes simply inserts my scrawl on top of the word. Perhaps there is a way to making this feature work more reliably, and I hope to figure it out soon. But for the time being, I’m just using my Apple Pencil to erase by double-tapping it.
Spellcheck and autocomplete in GoodNotes App
This is certainly interesting, but I’m not sure how beneficial it is. Goodnotes now employs artificial intelligence to look at what you’re writing as you type, letting you know if there are any spelling errors and offering to autocomplete a term. When it can provide assistance, places red dots under a word.
When you suggest a term, Goodnotes will write it and even try to emulate your own handwriting by analyzing the handwriting on the rest of the page. I don’t think it’s a perfect match to my own handwriting, but it’s more than adequate for the purpose.
I almost generally take handwritten notes for my own use, not to share, so if there are a few typos, I don’t mind. But the fact that this function works at all is very cool, and it could grow on me in the future.
When I think about employing AI to get work done, I always consider security. For example, I would not want to disclose any sensitive information with ChatGPT because whatever you input could become part of its central knowledge base.

I discuss utilizing Goodnotes on my iPad because that is where I take my notes. Goodnotes, however, is also compatible with the iPhone and Mac. When I’m on the go or working on my Mac, I frequently use my iPhone to access my notes.
